Meghalaya Police Unravel Mystery: Sonam’s Signal Linked to Raja’s Murder
Shillong: Sonam Raghuvanshi was accused of signaling her accomplices to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, according to police following a reconstruction of the crime scene on Tuesday. During this reenactment, authorities recovered a dao (machete) near the Weisawdong waterfall, close to the gorge where Raja’s body was discovered. The couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was on their honeymoon in Sohra when the incident occurred. Sonam, along with her lover Raj Singh Kushwaha and his friends-Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi-was taken to the site by the special investigation team of the Meghalaya Police for the reconstruction.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that the reconstruction was based on recent interrogations during which the accused confessed to their involvement in the crime. “Sonam was present when this occurred. She gave the signal just before reaching the parking lot,” Syiem explained. He detailed that Sonam was ahead of Raja, with Vishal on his right, Akash on his left, and Anand also to the left when the attack began. The SP emphasized that Sonam had confessed to her role in the incident.
Further details revealed that the post-mortem examination indicated Raja died from injuries caused by a sharp weapon. Vishal, also known as Vicky, delivered the initial lethal blow to Raja’s head, followed by Anand, and ultimately Akash, who struck the final fatal attack. After witnessing the bloodshed, Sonam reportedly moved away, while Raja’s body was discarded into the gorge by three of the attackers.
On June 11, a local court ordered all five suspects to police custody for eight days for further investigation. Although initial inquiries suggest a “love triangle” as the possible motive, authorities are exploring whether there are other underlying factors. “This investigation does not conclude here,” Syiem noted. “We will look into any other potential motives.”
