Relief Ahead: Arunachal Set for Rain After Week of Scorching Heat
Arunachal Pradesh is set to receive a much-needed dose of rainfall until June 19, following a week of hot and dry weather conditions, according to the meteorological office. Weather patterns are expected to intensify significantly from June 16 onwards, bringing scattered to widespread rain and thunderstorms to multiple districts, as stated by the State Disaster Management Department.
The district-wise forecast indicates that areas including Tawang, Kurung Kumey, West Kameng, Papumpare, Namsai, Changlang, and Longding are likely to experience frequent and widespread showers. Regions such as East and West Kameng, Kra Daadi, Kamle, and Pakke Kessang, which began the week with little to no rain, can also anticipate a notable increase in rainfall. Additionally, Upper and Lower Subansiri, Siang, and West Siang districts are expected to see a rise in precipitation.
The eastern and central belts of the state, particularly Upper Siang, Dibang Valley, Lohit, and Anjaw, are forecasted to experience increased rainfall between June 17 and 19. Residents in these areas are being advised to remain vigilant due to the potential risks of thunderstorms and lightning.
From June 1 to June 11, Arunachal Pradesh recorded only 81.7 mm of rainfall, which is 39 percent below the long-period average of 134.7 mm. The week of June 5 to June 11 was particularly dry, with just 11.2 mm of rainfall, marking an 88 percent shortfall from the normal weekly average of 94.5 mm. While the projected rainfall from June 13 to June 19 is anticipated to remain below normal at 53.7 mm, the situation is expected to improve significantly in the following week. Between June 20 and 26, rainfall could exceed the average, reaching approximately 130 mm compared to the normal of 106.5 mm.
Temperature patterns have likewise reflected the dry conditions. Last week, maximum temperatures were above normal in various parts of the state. On June 12, Itanagar recorded a maximum temperature of 39.7 degrees Celsius, which is 7.8 degrees above normal, while Pasighat reached 38.6 degrees Celsius, 7.6 degrees above average. These unusually high temperatures are primarily attributed to weak monsoonal activity, along with dry continental easterly and northeasterly winds. Clear skies have further exacerbated the situation by allowing for increased solar insulation.
The forecast notes that daytime temperatures may continue to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal in many areas within the next 24 hours, creating hot and humid conditions, particularly across the plains. However, maximum temperatures are likely to return to near-normal levels as the rain begins. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain normal to slightly above normal throughout this forecast period.
