Key Players in ‘Operation Honeymoon’: Court Appearance Sparks Tension
A special investigation team (SIT) from the Meghalaya Police is set to present Sonam Raghuvanshi and several co-accused in a local court on Wednesday. This follows their involvement in the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, which has been dubbed ‘Operation Honeymoon’ by law enforcement. On Tuesday, police gathered evidence from the residences and common haunts of the suspects in Indore and Ghazipur.
A senior police officer revealed that additional evidence was obtained from the homes of Sonam and others linked to the murder case in both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The SIT has secured a six-day remand for the co-accused from Indore and three days for Sonam, who is considered the primary suspect.
Sonam recently arrived at LGBI Airport in Guwahati and is being transported to Shillong by the Meghalaya Police, with an expected arrival time around midnight. The SIT’s mandate includes reconstructing the events leading to the murder to establish a solid case.
Investigators noted that Sonam took a local taxi to Guwahati prior to boarding a train to her next destination. Her accomplices also utilized a tourist taxi to reach the Guwahati station, where they then boarded a train back to Indore. East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem elaborated that Sonam had taken a local taxi from Mawkdok and changed trains multiple times during her journey.
Mawkdok is a tourist location near Sohrarim, where authorities found the couple’s rented scooter abandoned. Sonam, aged 24, is accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband during their honeymoon in Sohra, Meghalaya. This shocking incident sparked a manhunt across three states.
Raja was allegedly killed by individuals hired by Sonam, who initially went missing but later surfaced in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, where she surrendered to police at the Nandganj station after three co-conspirators were arrested overnight. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has stated that authorities possess “solid evidence” linking Sonam to the crime.
Sangma indicated that extensive evidence is emerging, and it took the police several days to piece together the case. Ultimately, the connections direct scrutiny toward Sonam.
The couple, married on May 11 in Indore, was reported missing on May 23, just hours after checking out from a homestay in Nongriat village, approximately 20 kilometers from where Raja’s body was discovered ten days later on June 2. Family members identified the body by a unique tattoo on Raja’s right hand, and various items, including a woman’s white shirt, a strip of medicine, an LCD screen fragment, and a smartwatch, were recovered from the crime scene.
