Unwind in Serenity: Discover the Enchantment of Chilika Lake at the Luxurious Rambha Palace Boutique Hotel
A once-forgotten palace, known as Rani Palace, has been revitalized into a boutique hotel beside the picturesque Chilika Lake in Rambha, Odisha. Previously marked by peeling walls and cobweb-filled ceilings, the palace now boasts its original charm, becoming a stunning destination in Ganjam district. Rambha’s streets buzz with life as fish markets flourish, providing fresh catches from the lake and livelihoods for local families. The palace itself stands a short walk from the serene lagoon, allowing guests to experience a regal retreat immersed in local culture.
The restoration journey spanned six years, led by Chana Daswatte, a protégé of renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Visitors are greeted by an entrance adorned with photographs capturing the palace’s past. The interiors, featuring a billiards table, crystal chandeliers, and beautifully restored lime plaster walls, evoke a sense of history while maintaining a contemporary feel. This delicate balance reflects the restoration team’s mission: to preserve the soul of the 18th-century structure while restoring its grandeur.
Himangini Singh, co-founder of Hunch Ventures and a partner at Rambha Palace, has deep personal ties to the locale, having visited the Chilika with her family as a child. Upon encountering the property in its dilapidated state, she felt it was “quietly asking for a second chance.” The restoration process involved using original architectural materials and techniques, guided by a central question: “If Rambha’s Rani were restoring this palace today, what choices would she make?” This imaginative consideration shaped their vision, reflecting the Rani’s values and love for local artisanship.
Guests can indulge in a culinary experience at the in-house restaurant, which serves traditional Odia cuisine alongside Continental and Chinese dishes. Head chef Gaurav Juyal shares insights into the palace’s history, noting that it was built in 1791-92 by Thomas Snodgrass, the Collector of Ganjam. The site has historical significance; it hosted the Utkal Union Conference (UUC), which unified the Odia-speaking regions.
The restored palace now features modern amenities while honoring its heritage. While structural renovations were necessary, the original layout was preserved, with only the roof reconfigured into a single stronger section. Spread over six acres, the hotel offers 15 rooms and opened its doors to the public in early April 2024. Although the queen did not see the finished restoration, her family visited, walking through the revived halls, marking a poignant moment of recognition.
A visit to Rambha often includes exploring local artisanship. The village, known for its artisanal fishermen, boasts a unique dry-fish market run by women, where customers can find various prawn types. Nearby, bamboo artisans offer exquisite baskets and talari hats, traditionally used for sun and rain protection. One can’t help but leave with these beautifully crafted items, which serve as perfect souvenirs.
Room rates at Rambha Palace start at ₹30,000, with seasonal discounts bringing prices down to ₹19,000. Accessible by road or train from Bhubaneshwar, this rejuvenated palace offers a majestic experience that beautifully blends history, nature, and local culture. As it welcomes guests, Rambha Palace stands not just as a hotel but as a testament to the enduring spirit of its past.
