Gaurav Criticizes Government’s Lack of Flood Preparedness in Assam
Gaurav Gogoi, the newly appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), sharply criticized the state government for what he described as a lack of proper planning in response to the devastating floods affecting Assam. During a two-day visit to the flood-impacted Barak Valley, Gogoi expressed serious concern, highlighting that major roads in the region have been rendered impassable, forcing residents to navigate via boats at key intersections. “The government consistently claims that work is either completed or nearly done. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. There has been no adequate planning,” he stated to the media upon his arrival in Silchar.
Taking office just the day before his visit, Gogoi also pledged to personally engage with flood victims to better understand their needs. He raised alarms regarding the deteriorating condition of sluice gates in Katigorah and the reportedly weakened embankments in Cachar district. “Relief materials have not reached numerous areas. Our party members informed me that residents in Sonai held a sit-in protest outside the circle office on Tuesday night,” he noted. He held the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accountable for failing to prepare for these recurring floods, claiming they are more concentrated on attacking the Congress party.
Additionally, Gogoi questioned the recent state government’s proposal to arm civilians, stating, “For the past three months, it seems the government has forgotten how to manage the state. Now they’re considering arming civilians. What kind of policy is that? The risks of arms falling into the wrong hands are evident.” Earlier in the day, he visited flood-affected areas in Udharbond, offered prayers at the Maa Kachakanti temple, and later convened with party workers at Indira Bhavan, the Congress committee office in Silchar. He also inspected the sinking areas on Shibbari Road in Tarapur and distributed relief supplies in the Borkhola and Katigorah constituencies. Looking ahead, Gogoi plans to visit several relief camps around Silchar on Thursday.
