Urgent Warning: Himanta Calls for Caution Amidst Assam’s Rising Flood Risks
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a warning on Sunday for residents of riverside and low-lying areas to remain vigilant as heavy rains in Assam and neighboring Arunachal Pradesh pose a significant threat of flooding. In a message on X, Sarma reported that intense rainfall is already being recorded, with Silchar receiving 42 cm, Karimganj 35 cm, and Hailakandi 30 cm of rain. He urged those living in vulnerable areas to stay alert and heed local advisories, emphasizing the importance of safety and preparedness.
The Chief Minister highlighted that rainfall in upstream Arunachal Pradesh-17 cm in Kibitoo, 15 cm in Hayuliang, and 10 cm in Kalaktang-could lead to a sharp rise in river levels across Assam. The state is currently facing a serious flood crisis, with ten major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, flowing above the danger mark.
So far, the floods and landslides have resulted in eight fatalities, affecting over 78,000 people across more than 15 districts. The severe weather has also disrupted transport infrastructure, impacting road traffic, train services, and ferry operations.
In response to the situation, the Central Water Commission has issued an orange alert, cautioning residents about additional rainfall and rising water levels. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reached out to Sarma, offering central government support for ongoing relief efforts to assist those affected by the crisis.
