The Indian all-party Parliamentary delegation, led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Baijayant Jay Panda, paid tribute to the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by lighting candles at the Basilique Notre-Dame d’Afrique in Algiers on June 1. The delegation emphasized India’s united front against terrorism in a message shared on the social media platform X, stating, “India stands united to combat terrorism. Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Delegation lit candles in memory of the victims of #PahalgamTerroristAttack.”

In highlighting the global nature of terrorism, the delegation briefed Algerian media, think-tanks, the Indian diaspora, and friends of India about the attack and its implications. They observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims, as acknowledged in further posts by the Indian Embassy in Algeria.

The delegation also visited the Maqam Echahid (Martyrs Memorial), a historical monument that honors those who died during the Algerian War of Independence, and the National Museum of the Moudjahid, which commemorates Algeria’s fight for liberation. Baijayant Jay Panda noted on his X account, “India and Algeria share deep bonds of history, struggle, and resilience.”

Beginning their engagements in Algeria with a briefing from India’s Ambassador to Algeria, Swati V. Kulkarni, the delegation focused on the North African nation’s approach to counter-terrorism, including Operation Sindoor. The Ambassador reinforced the importance of India-Algeria relations, underscoring India’s firm stance against terrorism.

BJP MP Rekha Sharma remarked that their visit also aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation with Algeria and resonating the global message of Operation Sindoor. Following their engagements in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, the delegation arrived in Algeria to gather international support against terrorism, particularly that which emanates from Pakistan.

Upon arrival, the delegation was welcomed by Ambassador Kulkarni and several officials from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They will continue to advocate for a unified stance against terrorism throughout their stay, maintaining focus on international collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts.

The outreach comes in the wake of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack, furthering global cooperation to address this pressing issue. The delegation includes prominent figures such as Nishikant Dubey, Phangnon Konyak, and former diplomat Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who are collectively emphasizing the need for a robust response to terrorism on an international scale.
