Assam Floods: Severe Waterlogging in Guwahati Sparks Red Alert
Incessant rain has severely impacted Assam, particularly in the state capital, Guwahati, leading to widespread waterlogging that has disrupted daily life and traffic. On Friday, the situation remained dire, prompting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to announce that the adverse weather is expected to continue into Saturday. He stated during a press conference that heavy rainfall across Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh has adversely affected numerous areas, and the state government is actively monitoring developments.
In light of the severe weather conditions, all state government employees in the Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) districts have been granted special casual leave for Saturday. Schools and colleges will remain closed, and private businesses have been advised to take necessary precautions to ensure safety. Significant flooding has been reported in various parts of Guwahati, including Rukminigaon, Beltola Survey, Hatigaon, Geetanagar, Anil Nagar, Lakhimi Nagar, Jatia, Maligaon, and Panjabari, following relentless rain throughout the day.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that he has invited Meghalaya’s Chief Minister to Guwahati for discussions on rampant hill-cutting, which is believed to be exacerbating the flooding and landslide issues plaguing both states, especially in Guwahati. Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued a red alert for May 31 for several districts, including Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, and Darrang.
During the day, three landslides were reported in Guwahati, although no casualties have been confirmed. Meteorological officials noted that a well-marked low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal near Odisha is expected to intensify into a depression, potentially bringing even more heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds to several districts in Assam.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has warned residents about the likelihood of additional waterlogging, traffic disruptions, tree falls, and localized landslides if heavy rains persist in Guwahati.
