Severe Weather Alert: Assam Faces Heavy Rains and Potential Flooding Ahead
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for severe weather conditions across Assam, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, particularly in the western and southern regions of the state. This inclement weather is due to a well-defined low-pressure area located over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the Odisha coast. The IMD reports that this system features a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 kilometers above sea level and is expected to move slowly northward, likely intensifying into a Depression over the northern Bay of Bengal within the next day.
Several districts are under high alert as they brace for torrential rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. The areas most at risk include Cachar, Hailakandi, Sribhumi, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, West Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bajali, Baksa, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Darrang, Udalguri, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, and Dima Hasao.
In Guwahati, persistent heavy rainfall is likely to lead to urban flooding, significant traffic disruptions, and increased risks of falling trees and localized landslides, especially in vulnerable hillside areas. The municipal and emergency departments in the city are actively monitoring the weather conditions, with control rooms prepared for prompt responses.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has released an advisory urging residents to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures. Travelers are encouraged to postpone non-essential journeys and to avoid going outside during heavy rains.
Those living in low-lying areas and on slopes should be especially cautious of potential flash floods or landslides. Authorities advise citizens to keep informed through official updates and adhere to all safety guidelines provided by local agencies.
