Will Shafiqur Rahman’s Departure to Doha Reshape Bangladesh’s Politics?
Geopolitical tensions surrounding Bangladesh and the controversial proposal for a “humanitarian corridor” to Rakhine State appear to converge on one nation: Qatar. Following a two-day visit to Doha by Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser, Khalilur Rahman, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman is set to travel to the Qatari capital. As of now, there is no official word on the purpose of Shafiqur Rahman’s trip or who he plans to meet.
Importantly, sources indicate that Shafiqur Rahman had a closed-door meeting with General Waker-uz-Zaman, the chief of the Bangladesh Army, the day before his departure, suggesting that he may have briefed the general on his plans for Doha.
Earlier, reports from Northeast News revealed that U.S. Charge d’Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson flew to Doha on May 22, ostensibly for personal leave. However, Bangladeshi government sources claim she aimed to engage with key American officials during her visit.
Just three days later, Khalilur Rahman was in Doha to extend an invitation to the daughter of Qatar’s Amir, Tamim bin Hamad Khalifa Al Thani, to visit a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar. There are indications that Rahman may have also discussed the “humanitarian corridor” matter with U.S. officials, a topic pivotal to the geopolitics involving Rakhine State and the Arakan Army. Rahman has since returned to Dhaka.
Current reports suggest that the “humanitarian corridor” initiative has stalled, facing strong opposition from the Bangladesh Army and various political factions, including the BNP. The sensitivity of this issue, deemed militarily fragile from Bangladesh’s viewpoint, has prompted caution amidst broader regional concerns.
