In a significant development for India’s judiciary, the Supreme Court Collegium convened on May 26 and made pivotal recommendations for the transfer and elevation of 21 judges across various High Courts. Among the notable transfers, Justice Sujoy Paul is set to move from the Telangana High Court to the Calcutta High Court, while Justice V Kameswar Rao will shift from Karnataka to Delhi. Additionally, Justice Lanusungkum Jamir is recommended to transition from Gauhati to Calcutta.

The Collegium’s report also highlights other prominent transfers, including Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre from Bombay to Delhi, Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra from Allahabad to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and Justice Suman Shyam transitioning from Gauhati to Bombay.

The five-member Collegium, led by Chief Justice B R Gavai, further recommended the appointments of three judges to the Supreme Court: Karnataka High Court Chief Justice N V Anjaria, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi, and Justice A S Chandurkar from the Bombay High Court. This decision addresses the three current vacancies in the Supreme Court created by the retirements of former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justices Abhay S Oka and Hrishikesh Roy.

According to a resolution made public on the Supreme Court’s official website, “The Supreme Court collegium in its meeting held on May 26, 2025 has recommended elevation of the following chief justices/judge of the high courts, as judges in the Supreme Court – Justice N V Anjaria, Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice A S Chandurkar.”

In addition to these appointments, the Collegium is also advocating for the elevation of five High Court judges to the position of chief justices in the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gauhati, Patna, and Jharkhand. This move is part of the Collegium’s ongoing efforts to ensure efficient judicial administration and uphold the integrity of the judicial system in India.

Judicial appointments and transfers play a crucial role in maintaining the balance and efficacy of the Indian judiciary, as these decisions impact the functioning of various courts and the delivery of justice across the nation. The recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium reflect a process designed to enhance the quality of justice and uphold public confidence in the legal system. As these changes unfold, they will likely have a lasting influence on the judiciary, shaping the legal landscape of India for years to come.

In summary, the Supreme Court Collegium’s recent recommendations not only indicate strategic transfers of judges but also demonstrate its commitment to reinforcing the judiciary through thoughtful appointments, ensuring a robust legal framework. This timely reshuffle highlights the dynamic nature of the Indian judiciary and its ongoing evolution in response to emerging challenges.
