North Garo Hills’ New Rs 51.82 Lakh Water Harvesting Project Launched
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Koknal Water Harvesting Structure in Rangmangre, North Garo Hills, on May 26. This project, valued at ₹51.82 lakh, is part of the Climate Adaptive Community-Based Water Harvesting initiative, aimed at enhancing water management in the region.
The newly established structure will collect, store, and manage rainwater, playing a vital role in conserving water for irrigation, particularly in times of water scarcity, erratic rainfall, or drought conditions. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
On the same day, Chief Minister Sangma also inaugurated two girls’ hostels in North Garo Hills. One of the hostels, located at Mendipathar College, was constructed at a cost of ₹3 crore under Article 275 and will function on a non-profit basis, managed by the Awe Self Help Group (SHG).
Additionally, a second Tribal Girls’ Hostel was opened in Resubelpara, built at a cost of ₹2.5 crore, and will be managed by Ramke Memorial School. These educational facilities underscore the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure for girls in the region, ensuring they have the necessary support for their academic pursuits.
