Unyielding Storms Ahead: Goa, Kerala, and Karnataka Under Red Alert as Monsoon Approaches; Mumbai Prepares for Monsoon Deluge!
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant heavy rainfall warning as southern and western states, including Kerala and Karnataka, brace for the imminent arrival of the southwest monsoon. A red alert has been activated for Goa, predicting persistent heavy downpours until Sunday. The coastal state has already experienced intense rainfall over the last 24 hours, prompting authorities to remain vigilant.
Forecasters predict heavy rainfall starting from May 25 through May 27. As of Saturday, conditions are expected to become increasingly cloudy, with showers and thunderstorms lingering until Monday. The onset of the southwest monsoon in both Kerala and Karnataka appears imminent, driven by a well-marked low-pressure area forming over the Arabian Sea. This system is rapidly intensifying, signaling a significant weather shift.
N. Puviyarasan, director of the IMD-Bengaluru, shared insights with the Times of India, stating that current weather patterns in Kerala are conducive to officially declaring the monsoon’s arrival. Despite considerable rainfall in recent days, an official announcement has yet to be made. A red alert has been issued for coastal Karnataka, alongside an orange alert indicating very heavy rain in parts of south and north interior Karnataka. Puviyarasan noted, “If rainfall persists across the state for 48 hours, we may announce the monsoon’s onset simultaneously with Kerala.” It is atypical for both states to experience the monsoon commencement concurrently.
Bengaluru’s weather forecast includes scattered showers over the next five days. The IMD has also listed a red alert for several districts in Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Idukki, and Malappuram, warning residents to be prepared for severe rainfall.
In Goa, a similar red alert is in effect, signaling heavy to very heavy showers expected to persist until Sunday. The weather department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to hazardous conditions, with wind speeds forecasted to reach 40–50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h along the Goa and Konkan coast.
Turning to Mumbai, the city witnessed partly cloudy conditions on May 23, with temperatures fluctuating between 25°C and 33°C. Similar weather is anticipated for May 24, though the IMD warns of possible moderate rains or thunderstorms. From May 25 to May 27, a significant shift in weather is anticipated, with heavy rainfall expected under predominantly cloudy skies. Residents should prepare for temperatures between 24°C and 32°C, and potential disruptions from waterlogging and traffic issues.
While rainfall may taper off slightly after May 28, sporadic showers and partly cloudy skies will persist until May 29. Citizens are strongly advised to stay informed about weather updates and heed any safety warnings during this period of anticipated heavy rainfall.
As southern states prepare for the southwest monsoon, residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant in light of the severe weather forecast.
