Kisan Congress Calls for Urgent Compensation for Manipur Farmers Affected by Violence

The chairman of the All India Kisan Congress, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, called for full compensation for farmers in Manipur who have faced significant losses due to ethnic violence in the state since May 2023. Speaking at the launch of the “Kisan Nyay Yodha” campaign at Congress Bhavan, Khaira criticized the BJP-led government for failing to fulfill its promises to this affected community.

Khaira emphasized that despite government assurances of compensation for farmers who have lost access to their lands due to ongoing violence, little relief has been provided. He noted that the BJP had previously announced a compensation package of around Rs 30 crore, but this amount has not reached the farmers in need.

“The BJP promised a relief package, but they have failed to deliver it,” Khaira stated. “They cite security issues as the reason, but the truth is that many farmers are still unable to access their own fields, let alone cultivate them.” He estimated that the total losses for Manipur’s farmers could exceed Rs 250 crore as extensive tracts of farmland remain inaccessible and uncultivated due to the continued ethnic strife.

Khaira demanded 100% compensation for all farmers affected by the violence and instability. “Their livelihoods have been shattered through no fault of their own, and it is the state’s responsibility to ensure their survival,” he said. He condemned the violence, particularly against unarmed civilians and women, and expressed deep concern over increasing reports of rape, torture, and murder, calling for the highest levels of public and institutional condemnation.

“What happened in Manipur in 2023 was horrifying,” he remarked, highlighting the inadequacy of the government’s response. “Innocent women were raped, civilians were tortured and killed. The response from the BJP government was not only delayed but also shamefully insufficient.”

Khaira accused authorities of delaying justice and criticized the state machinery for its lack of effective measures against those responsible for the violence. He pointed out that victims are still “running from pillar to post” seeking justice, underscoring the governance failure.

“We claim to be building a multi-trillion dollar economy, but if women and minorities are targeted with the establishment’s tacit support, this marks a dark chapter for Indian democracy,” Khaira declared. “Justice delayed is justice denied; thus far, justice has not been served to the people of Manipur.”

His remarks come amid ongoing worries about the long-term impact of ethnic violence in the state, with thousands displaced, abandoned farmland, and fractured community trust. More than a year after the crisis began, Manipur continues to struggle for recovery.

The Kisan Nyay Yodha initiative, launched by the Kisan Congress, aims to mobilize support for farmers’ rights and address agrarian issues across India, especially in conflict-affected regions. Khaira urged civil society and political stakeholders to advocate for both relief and justice for the victims in Manipur.
