DC Addresses Urgent Grievances of NIT Students in Collaborative Meeting

NAHARLAGUN, 23 May: Responding to the serious grievances of students at the Film & Television Institute (FTI) in Jote, Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner Jiken Bomjen convened a meeting on Friday to address the issues with all relevant stakeholders at the Directorate of Information and Public Relations.

During the meeting, Executive Engineer (Electrical) Rajesh Dawe announced that the Power Department has signed a no-objection certificate with the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jote. This agreement allows the FTI to share an express power line with NIT for one year, aimed at reducing the frequency of power cuts affecting the institute. However, Dawe advised the FTI to seek its own express line to ensure a consistent power supply.

In his address, Bomjen instructed Sangdupota Circle Officer Limpi Rallen to monitor law and order at the FTI. He proposed establishing an ex-officio position for the Deputy Commissioner to improve accountability regarding local matters at the institute. Bomjen also suggested appointing a public relations officer to facilitate communication between the FTI, local communities, and various departments, including the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). Furthermore, he recommended hiring a legal counsel to address the institute’s legal matters.

Managing the immediate concerns, Bomjen urged the executive engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department to devise a temporary solution for managing debris from the water treatment plant (WTP) construction at the FTI. The debris has been obstructing the main road between residential areas and classrooms, complicating daily commutes for students.

Devesh Budhani, Executive Engineer of CPWD, assured attendees that the CRT building, which accommodates the classroom theater and performance labs, would be completed and handed over by May 31. He also committed to having the girls’ hostel ready by June 15, with subsequent plans for a sound studio and a preview theater.

Chief Academic Coordinator Bishnu Dev Halder highlighted critical issues faced by campus residents, mentioning that ongoing shortcomings in clean water and electricity supply, alongside poor road conditions, have severely disrupted daily activities and heightened tensions among students.

Ngurang Niya, the Executive Engineer from the Public Health Engineering Department, reported that construction of the WTP is approximately 70 to 80% complete and a temporary water lifting system is operational. He noted that the early onset of the monsoon season has adversely affected ongoing construction work and water supply.

Earlier, Gijum Tali, Director of Information and Public Relations, expressed frustration over the slow progress of CPWD projects and urged for improved coordination among the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), CPWD, and contractors.

The meeting included participation from the FTI deputy registrar, Sangdupota CO, RWD assistant engineer, and others. Currently, FTI students are on an indefinite academic strike, claiming administrative neglect and unfulfilled promises regarding essential infrastructure and educational resources. They have expressed concerns over inadequate classroom facilities and the lack of proper power and water connections. The FTI, without a full-time director, is presently managed by officials from SRFTI, Kolkata, further exacerbating the situation.
