Assam Student Bodies Demand Action: 12-Hour Duliajan Shutdown on May 23
A coalition of 11 student organizations has declared a 12-hour bandh in Duliajan, Assam, scheduled for May 23, from 5 AM to 5 PM. This protest is in response to a series of recent incidents that have fueled public outrage throughout the region.
The bandh is being organized by prominent student bodies, including the Tai Ahom Students’ Union, Sonowal Kachari Students’ Union, Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), Chutia Students’ Union, and Adivasi Students’ Union. These groups have come together with a unified message, issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to local authorities to address their demands.
Central to their grievances is the immediate arrest of individuals allegedly responsible for the desecration of a statue of Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister, which has deeply offended many residents. Additionally, the coalition is calling for quick action regarding a recent assault on the home of senior journalist Brajen Gogoi.
The coalition has also condemned the handling of social worker Sankarjyoti Baruah by the police, alleging that he was handcuffed in a manner deemed disrespectful and a violation of human dignity. They are demanding disciplinary measures against the officers involved in this incident.
Moreover, the organizations are pursuing legal action against the BN Singh petrol pump for alleged misconduct. They have warned that not meeting their demands will result in intensified protests in the future.
Local authorities are enhancing security measures in anticipation of the bandh, ensuring close monitoring to maintain law and order during this period of shutdown.
