89 Taiwanese Citizens Reported Missing or Detained in China: Urgent Call for Action

Taipei: The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has revealed that as of last month, 89 Taiwanese individuals remain unaccounted for or are believed to be held in China, highlighting significant risks associated with travel to the mainland, according to the Taipei Times. MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng informed the Legislative Yuan’s Internal Administration Committee that from the beginning of last year until the end of last month, there were 102 recorded instances in which Taiwanese citizens faced interrogation or detention while visiting China.

Minister Chiu noted that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has raised the stakes for Taiwanese travelers by implementing a 22-point set of “guidelines” aimed at sanctioning those labeled as “Taiwanese independence separatists.” Among the 102 reported cases of Taiwanese who encountered interrogation or unlawful imprisonment since January 1 of last year, 89 individuals have been classified as missing, with their freedoms severely compromised. In contrast, 13 individuals were temporarily interrogated and held.

To mitigate these dangers, the government pledges to continue issuing warnings and information about the risks of traveling to China through its website, social media platforms, and press conferences. Although travel remains an individual choice, the public is encouraged to register on the council’s online platform for those visiting China, Hong Kong, and Macau, enabling the government to provide timely assistance if required. According to Chiu, during the period from January 2023 to the end of last month, a total of 86,387 individuals registered on this platform.

Furthermore, the government will persist in offering educational courses about China to ensure that students acquire a thorough understanding of cross-strait relations, as explained by Minister Chiu in the Taipei Times report.
