Overnight Rainfall Disrupts Classes and Floods Low-Lying Areas in Guwahati
A significant portion of Guwahati, especially low-lying areas, was submerged in floodwaters for several hours on Thursday due to heavy rainfall that began late Wednesday evening and persisted until Thursday morning. This deluge made it challenging for students to reach their schools and colleges, with floodwaters invading numerous educational institutions. Students and office workers experienced severe delays, having to wait for hours to catch public transport to their destinations. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Guwahati recorded 13 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, affecting several key areas such as Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, and Hatigaon.
During a visit to the flood-affected regions, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania, alongside Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, stated that drainage work in Rukminigaon is underway. He assured that once this work is completed, the waterlogging issues in the area would be resolved. The IMD noted that the highest rainfall was recorded in the North Guwahati College area at 3.3 cm, followed closely by IIT Guwahati at 3.2 cm and Downtown University, along with the airport area, receiving 1.3 cm.
Rukminigaon High School has been hit hard by the floods, with students struggling to attend classes. The school’s headmaster reported infrastructure damage leading to class disruptions, and he noted a yearly decline in student enrollment due to the school’s deteriorating condition. The area has faced ongoing flooding for the past four to five years, with classrooms on the ground floor remaining unusable for six months of the year. Currently, the school has an enrollment of 168 students.
The rain during the early hours of Thursday also inundated areas in Basistha, with Garchuk receiving 2 cm of rainfall, according to IMD reports. The rainfall, which started at 11:30 PM on Wednesday and ended at 6:00 AM on Thursday, included a peak of 1.4 cm recorded between 2:15 AM and 2:30 AM, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 km per hour.
