Devastating Blow: Militant’s Death Strikes Hamas, Yet Long-Term Impact Remains Uncertain

The possible assassination of Muhammad Sinwar, a prominent figure within Hamas, could mark a significant tactical success for Israel, yet the long-term implications remain uncertain. Sinwar is regarded as one of Hamas’s key military commanders in Gaza and is the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, who was involved in the group’s October 2023 attacks against Israel and was killed by Israeli forces last year. Israeli and Middle Eastern officials view Muhammad Sinwar as a critical barrier to achieving a cease-fire in Gaza, largely due to his strong opposition to the precondition of relinquishing arms set by Israel.

While Sinwar wields considerable influence, he is not the sole military leader within Hamas resisting concessions to Israel. Analysts suggest that while his death would strike a blow to the organization, it might not significantly alter Hamas’s strategic objectives or operational strength. “If confirmed, his death would definitely be another big blow to Hamas,” notes Mkhaimar Abusada, a political scientist from Gaza. “But I’m not sure if this will lead to a compromise with Israel; even worse, his successor might be more radical,” he adds, stressing that Hamas operates through collective decision-making.

Israel’s military objectives extend beyond specific assassinations, aiming for complete victory over Hamas, though current leaders have struggled to articulate what that entails. Historically, the group has endured numerous targeted killings of its leadership without losing its operational capabilities. Recent events illustrate this resilience, as significant figures, including Ismail Haniyeh and Muhammad Deif, have been eliminated without dismantling Hamas’s governance or military structure.

Interestingly, major military successes against Hamas have led to an uptick in the organization’s resolute stance rather than a sign of vulnerability. Following the assassination of Haniyeh last July, cease-fire negotiations faltered, and after the death of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas described his death as galvanizing its resolve to continue its course. Nevertheless, a truce was ultimately reached three months later, demonstrating that the war’s direction heavily relies on the actions of both Israeli and Hamas authorities.

Currently, Israel is focusing on two objectives: securing a temporary cease-fire to release hostages and achieving a decisive defeat of Hamas. The group, however, opposes both paths, leading to a prolonged conflict unless Israel alters its hardline stance. Israeli officials have signaled intentions to escalate military operations in the coming days, further complicating the potential for peace.

Political analysts, including Ahmad Jamil Azem at Qatar University, argue that Israeli persistence in the war represents a more significant impediment to peace negotiations than Hamas’s leadership changes. Even without Sinwar, Hamas retains a cadre of experienced commanders capable of leading its operations. Reports indicate that they have preserved a fighting force of over 20,000, similar to pre-war levels, despite heavy losses since October 2023.

Despite ongoing violence, Hamas continues to demonstrate its military capabilities, recently launching one of its most considerable rocket barrages at southern Israel in months. Furthermore, intelligence assessments suggest that Hamas has maintained a strategic network of tunnels and its military intelligence unit, vital for its governance and operations in Gaza.

Hamas aims to achieve a stalemate, ensuring its survival as a movement amid significant bloodshed. In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is focused on Hamas’s total defeat along with the retrieval of hostages, a dual objective that analysts deem incompatible. As tensions continue, Ibrahim Dalalsha, a Palestinian political analyst, reflects on Israel’s inconsistent strategy, suggesting that it may ultimately transform this situation into yet another historical footnote rather than a pivotal shift in the ongoing conflict.
