Nagaland Governor Urges Compassion and Youth Engagement on World Red Cross Day
Kohima: In observance of World Red Cross Day, Nagaland Governor La Ganesan emphasized a renewed commitment to compassion, humanitarian service, and community solidarity. He highlighted that the principles upheld by Red Cross volunteers serve as a beacon of hope during crises. Speaking at a state-level event titled “On the Side of Humanity,” Ganesan, who also presides over the Indian Red Cross Society’s Nagaland Branch, praised the dedicated efforts of Red Cross volunteers, especially in response to natural disasters and in hard-to-reach areas of the state.
He remarked, “Your selfless sacrifices and unwavering service in times of crisis reflect the very soul of humanity.” Ganesan pointed out this year’s international theme, which revolves around universal human values such as Hope, Empathy, and Kindness. “Hope lights our path through adversity, empathy connects us to one another’s struggles, and kindness is a language understood even in silence,” he noted.
During his address to a congregation of volunteers, youth, and community leaders, the governor made a heartfelt plea for citizens—particularly the youth—to adopt service and compassion in their everyday lives. He underscored that today’s pressing challenges, including climate change, public health issues, and social inequality, necessitate not only effective policy and leadership but also a united moral resolve and active engagement from the youth.
“Young people are not merely the leaders of tomorrow; you are the changemakers of today,” he stated, urging families and educational institutions to nurture empathy and kindness from a young age. “A society built on compassion is not an abstract ideal—it is a reality we can materialize through deliberate, everyday acts of love,” Ganesan emphasized.
He concluded his remarks by honoring Red Cross founder Jean Henry Dunant, reinforcing the profound legacy of humanitarianism with a poignant reminder: “We are neither angels nor saints, but human beings doing what we can, for as long as we can.” World Red Cross Day, celebrated annually on May 8, marks the birth of Dunant and the establishment of the Red Cross movement. Initially recognized as International Red Cross Day in 1948, the title was officially changed to World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day in 1984, reflecting its global nature and inclusive mission.
