Baksa Government Office Shuts Down for Tea Break, Sparking Public Outrage
The operations of government offices under the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) have faced significant scrutiny following an incident at the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) office in Jalah, located in Assam’s Baksa district. Reports indicate that the office was found closed during official working hours, remaining unstaffed until 12:22 PM. This situation raises serious questions about both administrative discipline and the efficacy of public service delivery.
During a visit to the office, journalists discovered that no officers or staff were present, and several office items were left unattended outside. Observers expressed concerns regarding security and the overall operational status of the Social Welfare Department’s essential field office.
Eventually, two staff members arrived but offered no satisfactory explanation for the prolonged closure. When approached by the media about why the office was locked and unmanned, one of the staff members casually remarked that they had gone out for tea. In further questioning about whether it was acceptable to leave a government office unattended during working hours, they acknowledged their lack of awareness regarding any rules on the matter.
Tensions escalated as the staff reportedly became aggressive, accusing journalists of violating their space while attempting to gather information on the incident.
This episode highlights troubling issues regarding the work culture in the BTC region, specifically in offices responsible for public welfare. As the Jalah CDPO office is part of the Assam and BTC government’s Social Welfare Department, such negligence has drawn public ire and criticism.
The incident raises critical questions about whether the BTC administration will take corrective measures against the negligent officials or allow such irregularities to persist within key government institutions.
