Israel’s latest strategy to displace residents in northern Gaza has deepened the despair among Palestinian civilians, many of whom have faced multiple displacements since the conflict began. This new displacement strategy exacerbates the already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where hunger has intensified following Israel’s blockade on aid supplies. The United Nations has warned of a “growing humanitarian catastrophe” as conditions worsen.
Anees Jneed, a displaced Palestinian currently residing in a makeshift shelter in northern Gaza, expressed his frustration. “We don’t want to even hear the word ‘evacuation’ again,” he said. Since the war’s onset in October 2023, Jneed and his family have faced displacement at least six times. “Displacement means death, humiliation, homelessness,” he added. Jneed is among those expected to bear the brunt of Israel’s plan to seize large segments of Gaza and force residents to move southward. On Monday, Israeli authorities announced the mobilization of tens of thousands of military reservists to expand their military operations, aimed at pressuring Hamas to compromise in stalled cease-fire talks and release hostages still held in Gaza.
However, Israel’s announcement initially backfired, leading Hamas to withdraw from cease-fire negotiations. This has only heightened the sense of gloom among Gazans. Wafa al-Ghouty, an accountant and mother of five, has been displaced seven times since the conflict began. Now residing in a coastal area in southern Gaza, she shared, “The situation is extremely challenging, not just because of the repeated displacement but also because of the hunger and helplessness of not being able to provide even a loaf of bread.” Facing her eighth potential displacement, al-Ghouty has already packed a small bag with her children’s clothes and essential documents.
Nearly two months have passed since Israel resumed its military campaign in March, following the breakdown of cease-fire discussions. The renewed offensive has led to continuous airstrikes and escalating ground operations, resulting in thousands of casualties. The United Nations reports that over 1.9 million people, the majority of Gaza’s population, have been displaced since the war began. The humanitarian situation has deteriorated further due to Israel’s aid blockade, leading to the shutdown of most bakeries, depletion of food stocks, and a critical shortage of medical supplies. While Israel maintains that the blockade is lawful and insists that Gaza still has sufficient provisions, on-the-ground realities paint a different picture.
Jneed’s struggle to provide basic necessities for his two children highlights the grim situation many face daily. “Every hour that passes is worse than the one before,” he mentioned, as his family survives on one meal a day. This desperate fight for survival dominates the lives of those trapped in the conflict, overshadowing everyday concerns as they focus on meeting basic needs.
This ongoing humanitarian crisis demands urgent international attention and intervention. As the conflict continues, the plight of the displaced and the worsening conditions in Gaza underscore the need for renewed dialogue and a commitment to lasting peace.
