In a groundbreaking development, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) successfully piloted face authentication technology during the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2025, as announced by the Ministry of Electronics and IT on Monday. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the National Testing Agency (NTA), represents a notable advancement in enhancing exam security and verifying candidate identities through state-of-the-art biometric technology.
The pilot, or Proof of Concept (PoC), sought to assess the feasibility and efficacy of Aadhaar-based face authentication for verifying the identities of candidates participating in one of India’s largest entrance examinations. The technology was implemented at selected NEET centres in Delhi and was fully integrated with the digital infrastructure of NIC and the examination protocols of NTA.
During the PoC, real-time face authentication was performed using Aadhaar’s biometric database, streamlining the candidate verification process in a contactless manner. According to the Ministry, the results demonstrated a high level of accuracy and efficiency, highlighting the potential of Aadhaar face authentication as a secure and student-friendly option for identity verification in large-scale exams.
The successful pilot opens doors for future applications and signifies a robust approach to combating impersonation in examinations. The Ministry indicated that these advancements could significantly curtail fraudulent practices during entrance exams, enhancing the integrity of the entire process.
This year, more than 22.7 lakh aspirants participated in NEET-UG 2025, which was held on May 4 at 5,453 centres across over 500 cities nationwide. The NTA, vigilant following past controversies linked to the examination—including allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in 2024—has significantly fortified security and monitoring measures. In a bid to ensure transparency and prevent malpractice, the agency also released comprehensive guidelines alongside admit cards and exam city slips.
As the landscape for educational assessments evolves, the adoption of biometric technologies like Aadhaar-based face authentication could redefine the standards for security and integrity in examination processes.
