Residents Rally Against PCMC’s Aggressive Demolition of 4,500 Illegal Structures in Maharashtra

Residents of Kudalwadi, Chikhali, and Charholi have voiced strong opposition to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) recent announcement regarding town planning schemes in their areas. The controversial notification, published in local newspapers, outlines plans to implement these schemes across 380 hectares in Chikhali-Kudalwadi and 1,425 hectares in Charholi.

Angry residents took to the streets, chanting slogans and burning copies of the notification as a show of disdain for the corporation’s decision. Prasad Gaikwad, Deputy Director of Town Planning at the PCMC, explained, “We have declared our intention to set up the Town Planning scheme in these areas.” He noted the necessity of this initiative to prevent the rise of illegal structures, especially following earlier actions taken by the PCMC to demolish around 4,500 illegal constructions in the Chikhali-Kudalwadi region.

However, this earlier demolition has sparked allegations that it was executed to benefit the builders’ lobby, claims that Gaikwad firmly denies. He insists that the town planning scheme aims to facilitate organized development without the drawn-out process of land acquisition. “Town Planning schemes have been successfully implemented by PMRDA and Pune Municipal Corporation, and they represent the most efficient way to ensure planned urban growth,” he added. PCMC anticipates an added benefit of acquiring 15 percent development land through the initiative.

Gaikwad further mentioned that the town planning scheme would be handed over to the same firm allotted the work in 2011, which had previously executed similar projects effectively. He addressed the local opposition, stating, “We will strive to gain the confidence of the local community. If more than 50 percent of the residents oppose the scheme, we will have to reconsider our plans.”

The opposition reflects broader concerns among residents about uncontrolled development and its implications for their neighborhoods. Many locals worry that the town planning initiative could pave the way for further encroachments and disrupt the community’s existing fabric.

As the situation unfolds, the PCMC faces the challenge of balancing urban development with the needs and concerns of its residents. Community engagement will be crucial in determining the future of the proposed town planning schemes, as local voices call for transparency and consideration in strategic planning decisions that affect their lives.

This unfolding story is representative of larger patterns in urban planning, where decisions made without extensive community consultation can lead to significant backlash and conflict. As the debate continues, it will be critical to monitor how municipal authorities respond to residents’ concerns and what measures are put in place to address them effectively.

For ongoing updates on this story and related civic issues, stay tuned for further developments.
