Meghalaya’s Ambitious Plan: Transforming Connectivity with 4-Lane Road from Umiam to Rilbong
Guwahati: In a significant move to ease traffic congestion on the busy Guwahati Secretariat (GS) Road, the Meghalaya government has proposed the construction of an elevated four-lane road connecting Umiam to Rilbong. This new route is designed to bypass the Umiam dam, which has been off-limits to heavy vehicles, including night super buses, for over a year due to ongoing retrofitting work.
Spanning 14.85 kilometers, the proposed road will completely circumvent the dam and has the potential to connect with the Shillong-Dawki road. Additionally, plans may include extending it as an overpass from Rilbong to Barik, pending the necessary approvals from the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL).
Recognizing the urgent need for infrastructure updates, the state government has engaged a consulting team to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). This report will evaluate the road’s alignment and feasibility, laying the groundwork for future developments.
Once the new route receives the green light, it is expected to significantly reduce both travel time and distance between Umiam and Shillong. Currently, the last 14 to 15 kilometers of the journey can take between one to two hours due to severe traffic congestion, particularly exacerbated by restrictions at the dam area. The typical drive from Guwahati to Umiam takes around 90 minutes, making the delays particularly frustrating for commuters.
The proposed elevated road not only addresses the immediate need for improved traffic flow but also aims to facilitate better connectivity for residents and travelers alike, potentially enhancing the overall economic landscape of the region. By alleviating the bottleneck at the Umiam dam, the government hopes to enhance the efficiency of transport services and provide a smoother experience for all road users.
