In 2014, during Pope Francis’s visit to Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, he traversed the traditional birthplace of Jesus in a specially designed white popemobile. Today, this iconic vehicle is being repurposed into a mobile health clinic to provide care to Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip, an initiative blessed by Pope Francis prior to his passing.
The clinic, while limited in its reach, stands as a testament to Pope Francis’s unwavering commitment to Palestinian civilians, especially children, caught in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Cardinal Anders Arborelius of Sweden emphasized, “The papamobile is a very concrete sign that Pope Francis is concerned with all the suffering of children in Gaza, even after his death.”
The transformation idea originated from Caritas, a Catholic humanitarian organization, with the concept presented to Pope Francis by Cardinal Arborelius. Notably, Arborelius is considered a potential candidate for the papacy following Francis’s death on April 28.
Originally donated by President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority for the Pope’s visit, the popemobile, a converted Mitsubishi, was subsequently given to the Franciscan order and then to Caritas. In November 2024, senior Vatican officials confirmed that Pope Francis had endorsed the initiative, as stated in correspondence reviewed by The New York Times.
Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, a key aide to the Pope, conveyed, “I am pleased to convey His Holiness’s approval of the project, together with the assurance of his prayers for all associated with this charitable endeavor.” This statement underscores the Pope’s dedication to global humanitarian efforts.
The popemobile will be staffed with a physician and nurse, equipped to provide basic medical care, rapid infection testing, and other essential services, according to Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem. The organization, comprising about 100 staff members in Gaza, is actively aiding Palestinians.
Preparation of the vehicle, including the installation of blastproof windows, is expected to take three weeks. Following this, Caritas Jerusalem plans to seek approval from Israeli authorities for its passage into Gaza. However, COGAT, the Israeli agency responsible for coordinating aid entries, has not yet commented on their intentions regarding this initiative. Israel has maintained a total blockade on humanitarian supplies due to tensions with Hamas.
Pope Francis was a vocal advocate for a cease-fire in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian aid and calling for the release of hostages. His stance included meeting with the relatives of those affected by the conflict and condemning the Hamas-led attacks that resulted in casualties and abductions.
Expressing deep concern for the safety of civilians, especially children, the Pope held multiple video calls with Christians in Gaza City. “Yesterday, children were bombed,” he declared in a December 2024 address. “This is cruelty. This is not war.”
Israel’s military asserts that its targets involve Hamas militants and infrastructural elements, blaming the group for civilian exposure to danger.
The popemobile’s new mission, symbolizing hope and solidarity, will also provide essential medical services. As Peter Brune, Secretary General of Caritas Sweden, stated, “It’s symbolic, but it’s also practical.”
