Brave Authorities Foil Extortion Plot by Banned Meghalaya Group, Two Arrested
Shillong: In a significant crackdown, the Meghalaya Police have dismantled an extortion ring linked to the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), arresting two of its operatives in the process. The operation was launched following credible intelligence regarding extortion threats against local businessmen and government officials.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) VS Rathore, the HNLC had targeted victims with threats of violence, which included implications of murder. The group communicated its demands via WhatsApp, initially asking for a staggering ₹20 lakh in extortion. In a strategic move, one of the victims worked closely with law enforcement, engaging in negotiations that successfully brought the demanded amount down to ₹10 lakh.
During a prearranged meeting in Lad Quinine meant for the exchange, police apprehended one of the suspects, identified as Pyndapbok Makri. His subsequent interrogation led authorities to arrest a second individual, Lary Pynkmen Nongshli, in Umtyra, East Jaintia Hills. SP Rathore confirmed that a case has been registered and investigations are ongoing, highlighting the persistent threat posed by the HNLC, a militant organization outlawed due to its involvement in murder, kidnapping, and various extortion activities.
In another incident illustrating ongoing illegal activities in the region, police arrested three drug smugglers after identifying one of them during transit from Nongpoh to Shillong late Friday night. The suspect, Wellborn Khongjoh, was reportedly traveling alongside two accomplices and was found to be carrying narcotics destined for distribution in Shillong, underscoring the local law enforcement’s commitment to tackling both organized crime and drug trafficking.
These operations are part of a broader initiative by Meghalaya authorities aimed at curbing illegal activities and reinforcing public safety in the region. As investigations continue, police urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could aid in further suppressing criminal elements operating within the state.
The involvement of organized crime groups such as the HNLC not only jeopardizes local businesses but compromises the safety and welfare of the general populace. Authorities are determined to dismantle such networks, restoring a sense of security and order in Meghalaya.
