Charting Prosperity: Prez Lourenco and PM Modi Forge New Growth Path for India-Angola Relations
New Delhi, May 3: India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, expressed optimism regarding the upcoming discussions between Angolan President Joao Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jaishankar emphasized the potential for these talks to strengthen India-Angola relations and enhance broader India-Africa partnerships.
Speaking after his meeting with President Lourenço, Jaishankar highlighted the warmth in Lourenço’s sentiments toward India and acknowledged the president’s guidance in furthering their bilateral collaboration. On social media platform X, he stated, “Honoured to call on the President of Angola during his State Visit to India. I value his warm sentiments for India and guidance for taking forward our partnership. Confident that his talks with PM @narendramodi later today will chart new avenues of growth for India-Angola & India-Africa ties.”
Upon his arrival at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Lourenço was greeted by President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi in a ceremonial welcome. Addressing reporters, Lourenço remarked on the significance of his visit, stating, “We see this visit as an important one for Angola in order to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. We are very thankful for the friendly and hospitable manner in which we were received yesterday by the people of India.”
This official visit marks the first by an Angolan president to India in 38 years, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Angola. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that during Lourenço’s visit, he is set to hold individual meetings with both Prime Minister Modi and President Murmu.
In addition to high-level discussions, multiple agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in various sectors are anticipated to be signed. Lourenço is also scheduled to participate in a business event in New Delhi on Sunday, which aims to promote investment and enhance commercial ties between the two nations.
Trade between India and Angola reached approximately $4.192 billion in the financial year 2023-24, underscoring the growing economic relationship. This visit is expected to lay the groundwork for a more dynamic partnership that reflects the shared priorities and aspirations of both countries.
As India looks to strengthen ties across Africa, President Lourenço’s presence in New Delhi signifies a pivotal moment for Angola as well, marking a renewed commitment to mutual cooperation and development.
With a vision for the future, both nations are poised to explore new opportunities that will not only enrich their bilateral ties but also contribute to regional stability and growth.
