Reviving Bangladesh’s Prosperity: Former PM Hasina’s Vision for a Golden Future

Dhaka, May 1: Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has voiced grave concerns over the deteriorating conditions of workers and farmers in Bangladesh, attributing their plight to the illegal seizure of power by anti-state elements on August 5, 2022. On this May Day, she extended heartfelt greetings to all workers and laborers both in Bangladesh and around the globe, emphasizing that no one has suffered as much as the nation’s working class, who have been foundational in establishing a self-sufficient and prosperous Bangladesh.

Hasina pointed out that the fabric of industrial stability has been torn apart, with numerous factories closed and many facing destruction through looting and arson. Consequently, millions of jobs have been lost, leading to soaring unemployment and skyrocketing prices that have rendered daily life unbearable. “During Eid, many workers did not even receive their legitimate wages or bonuses. When they advocate for their rights, they face violent retribution from the private militias of these illegitimate usurpers, pushing some into despair,” she stated.

The former Prime Minister reaffirmed the Awami League’s longstanding commitment to workers’ rights, framed by the ideals of the nation’s founding leader, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She noted that the Awami League has consistently championed the rights and welfare of workers, highlighting the introduction of protective measures for women in the workforce, including maternity leave and safeguards against harassment.

Hasina noted that every time the Awami League has been in power, it has prioritized uplifting the lives of workers. She cited the establishment of the Bangladesh Workers Welfare Foundation, which offers financial aid in cases of workplace accidents, disabilities, or death, and supports the medical treatment of serious ailments, alongside funding for workers’ children’s education. In addition, a central fund has been created to promote the welfare of workers in the garment sector, with salary increases reported across all sectors.

She underscored the Awami League’s dedication to strengthening partnerships with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), underscoring its role during Bangladesh’s independence and Liberation War. Hasina expressed optimism about the future, stating her belief in the historic bond between the Awami League and the working class, which she expects to play a crucial role in the movement to reclaim the country from what she described as illegal occupiers.

“Our workers inherit a legacy of courage, unity, and the pursuit of justice,” Hasina remarked. “May Day serves as a motivation for our ongoing struggle. On this significant day, I wish to extend my deepest respect to all workers across Bangladesh. Together, we will overcome adversity and revive a prosperous future for our nation.”

As Bangladesh navigates these pressing challenges, Hasina’s message articulates both a somber reflection on the current situation and a call to action for workers to rally together in the face of adversity. The resilience of the labor force remains essential in the country’s path towards reclaiming its promise of stability and growth.
