Kapil Sibal’s Bold Recommendations to PM Modi: Countering Pakistan’s Pahalgam Terror with US-Style Strategy

In a bold move following recent escalations, Congress leader and seasoned advocate Kapil Sibal urged the Indian government to take a firm stance against nations trading with Pakistan. Speaking at a press conference, Sibal called on the Centre to prohibit these countries from accessing Indian markets unless they sever trade ties with Pakistan. Drawing a parallel with the United States’ strategic trade policies, he stated, “What the US does with other nations, you should also do.” He underscored that while this could result in some economic losses, the nation would stand resolutely with the government in this endeavor.

This call to action came on the heels of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, triggered by a devastating terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. On April 22, the attack, which occurred in the picturesque Baisaran meadow, tragically claimed the lives of at least 26 individuals, including a citizen from Nepal, leaving many others injured. India, holding Pakistan accountable for its support of cross-border terrorism, has since implemented a series of retaliatory measures.

In a decisive response, India decided to suspend the long-standing Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, expressing its preparedness to reconsider if Pakistan renounces its support for terrorism. Additionally, the closure of the integrated Attari Check Post and the expulsion of Pakistani High Commission officials were enforced. In a significant move, the Government also annulled visas issued under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, mandating a 48-hour exit for Pakistanis residing in India.

Offering a roadmap for diplomatic pressure, Sibal proposed several initiatives to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He suggested convening a special session of Parliament to foster a unified approach and passing a resolution that encapsulates the nation’s sentiment. Sibal emphasized the importance of sending a delegation, comprising BJP and Opposition MPs, to global powerhouses such as the US, Europe, China, and Russia. “We should inform them on a global level about the situation,” he stated, urging that without such steps, creating diplomatic pressure would be challenging. Advocating for international engagement, he also insisted on leveraging the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution against terrorism, probing China’s stance in the process.

In retaliation, Pakistan threatened to suspend the pivotal Simla Agreement, a cornerstone of peace efforts post the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Further escalating tensions, Pakistan announced airspace restrictions affecting Indian airlines, prompting carriers like SpiceJet, Air India, and IndiGo to issue travel advisories. Moreover, Pakistan’s Cabinet Committee countered India’s measures by closing the Attari-Wagah border, a significant point of transit and trade between the two nations.
