Sarkhej Roza: Unveiling India’s Serene Architectural Masterpiece

As the sun casts its golden hues over the majestic Sarkhej Roza, the historic monument on the outskirts of Ahmedabad transforms into a scene of diverse human activities. Devotees stream toward the mosque for evening prayers, while a seeker meditates quietly near a tomb. Under the baradari, a weary traveler finds rest, and beyond the mosque, laughter echoes as children play cricket near a dried-up reservoir. This serene setting is not just a peaceful respite but a living testament to Gujarat’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.

Constructed in the 15th century, Sarkhej Roza holds an intricate tapestry of history within its walls, embodying the grandeur of Indo-Saracenic architecture—a fusion of Hindu, Jain, and Islamic styles. The complex comprises a blend of religious and royal structures, including a mosque, several mausoleums, palaces, pavilions, and residential quarters. At its core lies the Ahmed-Sar Tank, an impressive man-made lake created under Sultan Mehmud Begada’s rule, the great-grandson of Sultan Ahmed Shah, who founded Ahmedabad in 1411.

Commissioned by Sultan Muhammad Shah II after the death of the revered Saint Shaikh Ahmad Ganj Baksh Khattu in 1446, the monument became a favored retreat for Gujarat’s sultans, gradually transforming into a Sufi town. Over the years, additional structures like royal tombs, grand gateways, and expansive gardens were erected, enhancing its spiritual and historical significance. Today, Sarkhej Roza is recognized as the largest architectural complex of its kind in both Agra and Gujarat, celebrated for its majestic jali work and exquisite craftsmanship in brass, silver, and enamel.

Sarkhej Roza not only stands as a monumental example of architectural brilliance but also houses valuable artefacts, such as coins from the Sultanate period and rare, handwritten religious manuscripts. Among these treasures is an incomplete collection of the Quran and a copy completed in 1649, revered for its beauty in the Naskh script.

Sarkhej Roza has garnered attention from high-profile visitors over the years, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted its restoration during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, and cultural icons like Amitabh Bachchan and Javed Akhtar. The site also played host to scenes from the Bollywood film “Raees,” showcasing its picturesque and historical value to audiences globally.

As a hub of cultural gatherings, particularly during the holy month of Ramzan, Sarkhej Roza becomes a vibrant center of community life, where people congregate for prayers and iftar, sharing meals in a spirit of unity. “Over the years, I have actively participated in various events at Sarkhej Roza,” remarked Subamiya Akberali Kadri, a retired national union leader. His experiences highlight the complex’s role as a space for both local traditions and international events.

Beyond religious occasions, Sarkhej Roza remains a popular destination for school trips and family outings, inviting visitors from all walks of life to experience its historical and cultural allure. As Bhavna Ramrakhiani, founder of Sarkhej Roza Crafts and Saanjhi Virasat, notes, the monument becomes a temporary home to devotees during the last ten days of Ramzan, a testament to its enduring spiritual significance.
