Tiruchi Corporation’s Bold Move: Heartwarming Tree Translocation Boosts Panjapur Market Development
The Tiruchi Corporation has embarked on an initiative to translocate trees from Green Park as part of the preparations for establishing a new integrated wholesale vegetable market in Panjapur. The project involves relocating trees to accommodate the market’s construction, drawing both attention and critique from various civic groups. Leading the translocation effort is Green Care, a non-profit organization based in Coimbatore with expertise in tree conservation and transplantation. Over recent days, 33 trees, including neem, pungai, naaval, illupai, and marutham species, all aged over a decade, have been successfully uprooted from Green Park and replanted along the service road of the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway near Mannarpuram.
The relocation process involves the careful use of earth-moving equipment to transport the trees, which have been planted in beds reaching up to 10 feet deep, ensuring adherence to horticultural requirements. To prevent transportation damage, branches are covered. Local volunteers and the Tiruchi Corporation have been enlisted to facilitate watering and provide ongoing care, enhancing the trees’ chances for survival. K. Syed, chairman of Green Care, expressed optimism about the operation, stating, “There is enough space to translocate about 70 trees along the service road. Since the trees have been planted on the red soil, there is a good survival chance, and proper maintenance will enable the trees to grow well.”
The plan involves relocating a total of 297 trees from Green Park. Importantly, in line with environmental stewardship rules, the Corporation commits to planting roughly 2,970 new saplings across areas including Edamalaipattipudur Road, Panjapur, and surrounding regions to preserve and enhance the city’s green coverage. However, the project has drawn criticism from local activists and civic organizations, who argue against the use of the 22-acre Green Park site for construction purposes. Dissenters point to the availability of alternative government land near the highway and express concern over potential environmental impacts.
