Relief and Gratitude as Islamist Rally Cancelled in Siliguri, Darjeeliing Hills, Terai, and Dooars
In a significant turn of events, a proposed rally against the Waqf Amendment Act, scheduled to take place in Siliguri, has been cancelled following intervention from the West Bengal government and local administration. The news has sparked widespread relief and gratitude among residents across Siliguri, Darjeeling Hills, Terai, and Dooars. BJP MP Raju Bista, a prominent figure in the region, welcomed the decision, hailing it as a wise step. “I am grateful that good sense has prevailed. The West Bengal Government Administration has been able to convince the Islamist organisations to cancel their proposed anti-Waqf Amendment Rally in Siliguri,” he said. Bista praised the administration for their efforts, but also expressed concern over a statement made by the Imam of Fulbari Jama Masjid during a live telecast. According to the Imam, Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb had assured the rally organizers that they may be allowed to hold the event at a later date. Bista criticized this approach, labeling it a “double-standard” policy by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The Waqf Amendment Bill, passed by Parliament, aims to introduce transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties. Government sources emphasize that the amendment has no connection to any religion, focusing solely on better administration. The new measures also ensure democratic practices, including the involvement of women in Waqf Boards. Bista believes these changes will promote the use of Waqf properties to support economically weaker Muslim families and individuals, and that anyone with complaints can approach the courts. He stressed that street protests should not be used to challenge constitutional laws, as “street power should never replace constitutional provisions.”
The Muslim-majority region of Siliguri and its surroundings have historically remained peaceful, untouched by religious or communal politics. Bista emphasized the importance of maintaining this delicate balance, highlighting the need to protect the strategic Chicken Neck area from any potential unrest. “Our Siliguri, Darjeeling Hills, Terai, and Dooars have remained peaceful and free from religious-communal politics, and we intend to keep it that way. We will not allow organizations from outside our region to disturb peace in this critical area,” he stressed.
Bista extended his gratitude to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, and the administration for their efforts to prevent the rally and maintain peace in the region. The cancellation of the rally is seen as a significant step towards maintaining the region’s peaceful environment, and Bista’s comments underscore the importance of preserving this harmony.
