Nagaland Congress Condemns ‘Egregious’ Transfer Orders on Palm Sunday, terming it a ‘Gross Abuse of Power’
Nagaland Congress Slams Government Over Sunday Transfer Orders
In a move that has sent shockwaves across the state, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has strongly denounced the issuance of transfer orders on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, by the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (Personnel ‘A’ Branch), Government of Nagaland. The decision, which has been met with widespread criticism, marks a first in the state’s history since its independence in 1963.
According to internal government records, the transfers were made under Notification No. PAR-4/6/2020/B and Notification No. PAR-4/6/2020/A. The NPCC has emphasized the cultural and symbolic significance of this day, which marks the beginning of Holy Week for Christians. The party’s statement pointed out the inappropriateness of issuing official administrative orders on a day of great religious importance, stating, "Issuing such official government orders on a day of great religious importance shows a disregard for the sentiments of the Naga Christian community. It sets a dangerous precedent that must not be allowed to repeat."
Moreover, the NPCC has raised concerns about the increasing influence of Hindutva ideology in the state’s governance. The party’s opposition to what they perceive as an intrusion of ideologies and policies of the RSS that are alien to the Naga people was clear, as they urged the government to "resist the infiltration of ideologies and policies of the RSS that are not in sync with the Naga people’s beliefs and values."
The NPCC has called upon the state government to review or withdraw the notifications forthwith and exercise greater sensitivity in administrative decisions, especially those that touch upon the religious and cultural identity of the people.
The actions of the Nagaland Government have drawn a stark contrast to the existing democratic standards and values in the country. This controversy seems to have found the NPCC and the communities of Nagaland firmly asserting their resistance to such pro-BJP actions.
Prioritizing transparency, accountability, and cross-cultural empathy in the governance system seems to be an imperative in today’s Endeavour of resolving complex issues related to Naga society.
