Investigating NIA Custody, Tahawwur Rana’s Baffling Demands Revealed: Quran, Pen, and a Ray of Hope
Indian investigators are continuing to question Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a suspect in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in an effort to unravel a broader conspiracy behind the coordinated strikes. Rana, a Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, was extradited from the US and handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) earlier this week.
Since being taken into custody, Rana has been kept in a highly-secured cell within the NIA’s headquarters in New Delhi, guarded by security personnel around the clock. Sources have revealed that Rana has been provided with a copy of the Quran, which he requested, and has been observing Namaz five times a day in his cell. He has also been given paper and pen, although officials are keeping a close eye to ensure he doesn’t harm himself.
According to court directives, Rana is allowed to meet with a lawyer provided by the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) every alternate day and undergo a medical examination every 48 hours. Officials have stressed that Rana is being treated like any other arrested individual, with no special treatment.
NIA officials are grilling Rana based on a series of leads, including dozens of phone calls between him and David Coleman Headley, also known as Daood Gilani, the American national who is currently serving time in a US prison for his role in the plot. Investigators are also questioning Rana about people he met in the lead-up to the attacks, particularly a key contact in Dubai who may have been aware of the plan to target Mumbai.
Rana’s suspected links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, and the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which carried out the attacks, are also being probed. Officials believe that Rana’s answers, especially about his travel in the days leading up to the attack, may help uncover new details about the conspiracy.
The 64-year-old businessman has been the subject of intense scrutiny in recent days, with authorities hoping to extract crucial information from him. As investigators continue to question Rana, the world watches with bated breath to uncover the truth behind one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in modern history.
