Film Body Strike Conspiracy Unraveled: Empuraan Target of Political Interference, Claims Ganesh Kumar

Kerala Film Bodies’ Silence Amid Empuraan Controversy Sparks Debate

The Prithviraj Sukumaran-directed Mohanlal-starrer L2: Empuraan has been dominating headlines across the nation despite controversies and right-wing-led hate campaigns. The action thriller’s release was marred by controversy over its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots, prompting Mohanlal to issue an apology for the “emotional distress” caused by the film’s “political and social themes.” Amidst the widespread debate, the silence of major film bodies in the state, including the Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) and the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), raised eyebrows.

Notably, the KFPA and KFCC had been vocal about the financial struggles faced by producers and distributors, culminating in a planned strike on June 1. However, they remained mum on the Empuraan controversy, which sparked concerns over their neutrality. In contrast, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) extended support to the film, albeit after a three-day delay.

Interestingly, rumors emerged in late February that the KFCC was considering a token strike on March 27, coinciding with Empuraan’s release. The plan was subsequently shelved, reportedly after discussions with Culture and Youth Affairs Minister Saji Cherian. Now, Kerala Transport Minister and actor KB Ganesh Kumar has claimed that the entire strike call was part of a larger political conspiracy against Empuraan. Kumar, who is also the president of the Association of Television Media Artists (ATMA), alleged that some influential members of these associations conspired against the film to appease their political bosses.

According to Ganesh Kumar, the theme of Empuraan was leaked, and some members of the KFPA became aware of it in advance. He suspects that they seized the opportunity to impress their political bosses by projecting themselves as those trying to stop the movie’s release. “I know the people in the film industry better than anyone else. We often say that politicians have significant foresight and are always one step ahead. But there are people in the industry who are 100 times more cunning than that,” he remarked in a recent appearance on the ieMalayalam podcast.

Ganesh Kumar also questioned the purpose of the strike, suggesting that it was more about appeasing political masters than addressing genuine concerns. He pointed out that no tangible outcome was achieved through the strike and that the producers’ association’s demands were more about making a statement than addressing the challenges faced by the industry. Prithviraj’s mother, legendary actor Mallika Sukumaran, had earlier voiced similar concerns, alleging that the token strike was part of a broader scheme aimed at hindering the continued rise of her actor-director son.

As the debate surrounding the Empuraan controversy continues, it remains to be seen whether the silence of Kerala film bodies will be seen as a tacit endorsement of the film’s message or simply a lack of courage in addressing the issues.
