Volatile Scenes Erupt in Tripura Village as Anti-Waqf Bill Protestors Clashes with Security Forces
Tensions Rise in Tripura as Protests Erupt Over Waqf (Amendment) Bill
A confrontational scene unfolded in Kubjhar village, under the Kailashahar sub-division of Unakoti, Tripura, on April 12, as a group of minority Muslims, numbering over a hundred, took out a rally protesting the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The protesters, led by Kailashahar District President MD Badrujaman, demanded the repeal of the bill and marched towards Kailashahar city. The rally, initially peaceful, turned violent as the protesters attempted to push past security forces and damage barricades in the Murar Dukan area.
According to DIG (Northern Range) Rati Ranjan Debnath, the protesters were not authorized to hold the rally and were expected to return after attending a meeting. When asked to stop, the protesters allegedly got violent and engaged in a face-off with security forces. "We had placed barricades to prevent them from moving forward, but they continued their march and pelted stones at our security personnel, injuring many of them. We were forced to disperse the gathering to maintain law and order," Debnath said, reinforcing the tense situation.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, a contentious issue in the state, has sparked widespread protests across Tripura. The bill aims to amend the existing Waqf Act, 1954, and has been met with opposition from minority communities, who fear the changes will compromise their rights to property and religious institutions. The protest in Kubjhar village highlights the growing unease among minority groups in the region.
In a separate incident, a similar rally was carried out in the Muslim-dominated Sepahijala district, under the Sonamura sub-division, on the same day. The Tripura Police have deployed a significant number of security personnel across the Kailashahar sub-division to prevent any further incidents. Amidst the tensions, the situation has returned to normal, according to Debnath.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill has become a contentious issue in the state’s politics, with minority communities expressing concerns about the potential implications on their rights and institutions. The protests highlight the need for a more nuanced approach to addressing the concerns of minority groups in the state. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the Waqf (Amendment) Bill has become a rallying point for protests across Tripura, with no end in sight.
