Urgent: Everything You Must Know Before the Crucial May 7 Real ID Deadline for Stress-Free Travel
The federal government is set to enforce the Real ID requirements at all U.S. airports from May 7. This change means that to pass through security checkpoints for domestic flights, travelers must present a Real ID-compliant license or another accepted form of identification, such as a passport. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reports that 81% of travelers approaching airport checkpoints already hold Real ID-compliant identification, though this figure varies considerably by state.
In the weeks leading up to the deadline, federal and state authorities have been urging travelers to book appointments at motor vehicle departments to update their identification. However, scheduling availability has become increasingly limited as the deadline approaches. John Essig, the TSA’s federal security director for New York City-area airports, emphasized the importance of prompt action during a recent news conference at LaGuardia Airport, stating, “Make your appointments now as quick as possible. We certainly don’t want to hold up anyone without Real ID at the checkpoint.”
Signage reminding travelers of the Real ID requirement has been displayed at U.S. airports for years, although the deadline has been postponed multiple times. During this period, TSA officers have been actively distributing flyers with QR codes linking to Real ID information at airports like LaGuardia. Airlines, including Frontier Airlines, have also stepped up their efforts, utilizing customer emails and other communication channels to inform passengers of the forthcoming changes.
Introduced in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to establish federal standards for state IDs. Initially scheduled to take effect in 2008, implementation has been delayed several times due to various challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The Real ID cards are identifiable by a gold or black star, or in California, a yellow bear in the top right corner. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notes, “If the card does not have one of these markings, it is not REAL ID-compliant and won’t be accepted as proof of identity to board commercial aircraft.”
Travelers aged 18 and over will need a Real ID or another form of accepted identification for domestic flights within the U.S. If obtaining a Real ID by May 7 is not possible, the TSA suggests using alternatives like a U.S. passport, permanent resident card, or a trusted traveler ID, such as a Global Entry card. However, it is important to note that Real ID alone cannot be used for international travel. An “enhanced ID,” which is also Real ID compliant, can be utilized for travel to Mexico and Canada.
The TSA affirms the legitimacy of the May 7 deadline and warns that travelers without a Real ID or alternative accepted document may face delays due to prolonged identity verification processes. According to a TSA news release, individuals may encounter “additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint.” Therefore, the agency recommends travelers without a Real ID or alternative document to arrive at least three hours before their domestic flights. As TSA spokesman Carter Langston explains, “Identity verification is a lynchpin in security, and we will make sure that passengers are verified as being who they say they are before they can go beyond the checkpoint.”
