Assam: Aranya Suraksha Samiti Organizes Gach Bihu as Environmental Conservation Festival

In a unique initiative to promote environmental conservation, Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Assam is organizing Gach Bihu, an environmental festival, across various districts in the state. Similar to previous years, the festival aims to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and habitat preservation. This year, Gach Bihu will be celebrated in seven locations, including Hakama Beel in Bilasipara, Dhanasree Ghat in Udalguri district, Borhat in Charaideo district, Dakhin Pat in Majuli, Pachnoi in Sonitpur, Chiphajhar in Darrang district, and Mahamaya in Kokrajhar district.

On April 27, the festival will culminate in a grand celebration at Deepteshwari in Rangia of Kamrup district. The day will begin with the traditional Bihu dance and song performances under the shade of trees. As part of the festivities, gifts will be offered to trees, symbolizing the respect and appreciation for nature. Discussions on Bihu culture and environmental conservation will also be held, followed by the honouring of senior citizens for their contributions to the community.

The highlight of the festival will be the massive seedlings plantation drive, where local communities will participate in planting trees to promote afforestation and combat climate change. According to experts, the project has been successful in the past, with over 10,000 saplings planted across the state. This year, the organizers aim to surpass this number and make a significant impact on the environment.

Gach Bihu is not just a celebration, but a call to action for the people of Assam to come together and protect the state’s natural heritage. By promoting sustainable living and environmental conservation, the festival aims to inspire a new generation of conservationists who will take on the responsibility of preserving the state’s rich biodiversity.
