Mourning in Halls of Learning: IIT-Delhi’s Quest for Enhanced Support Amid Campus Suicides
IIT Delhi Confronts Student Suicides with ‘Comprehensive Action Plan’ amid Concerns over Competitiveness, Bias
The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) has acknowledged the role of excessive competitiveness, coaching culture, and social biases of caste and gender in contributing to student suicides on campus. This comes after an external committee, set up in March 2023, identified these factors in its report. The institute has committed to developing a comprehensive action plan to strengthen its student support structures, building on the recommendations submitted by the committee.
The committee, led by Santosh Kumar Chaturvedi, a former Dean of Behavioural Sciences and senior professor of psychiatry at NIMHANS, was established after students demanded an investigation into the factors contributing to five student suicides in 2023 and 2024. The report flagged high academic pressure, a grading system that reinforces “toxic competitiveness”, and caste and gender discrimination as key triggers on campus. Additionally, it recommended a clear anti-discrimination policy, rethinking the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) as the sole success metric, and strengthening faculty-student ties, among other measures.
IIT-Delhi’s Director acknowledged that the institute is developing an action plan to address these concerns, which will be tabled before the Board of Governors. The institute emphasized that these issues are not unique to IIT-Delhi, but rather a broader problem in the academic environment and society at large. It committed to addressing these issues within the campus and working with other stakeholders, such as other IITs, to engage with these issues at a larger level.
The report’s recommendations also included mandating civic learning to reduce bias, strengthening administrative responsiveness to student concerns, and choosing more empathetic campus leaders. IIT-Delhi has already initiated discussions on these issues through faculty meetings, deans’ committee meetings, and the Board of Students.
As the institute moves forward with its comprehensive action plan, it is essential to address the systemic issues contributing to student stress and suicide. By prioritizing student well-being and implementing measures to reduce competitiveness, bias, and exclusivity, IIT-Delhi can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for its students.
