Meghalaya Power Minister Seeks Paradigm Shift in State’s Inefficient Power Sector to Power Prosperity and Progress
Meghalaya’s Power Sector in Need of Overhaul, Says Minister
Meghalaya’s Power Minister, Abu Taher Mondal, has stated that the state’s power sector, encompassing generation, distribution, and transmission, requires a comprehensive revamp. The minister’s comments come at a time when the state is exploring various options to improve its power infrastructure. According to Mondal, the distribution, transmission, and generation sectors need immediate attention to ensure that consumers receive maximum benefits.
Mondal revealed that the government is working on an overhaul of the power sector, with the aim of stabilizing the situation in a few months. The state has made significant progress in electrifying almost all villages, with a survey already completed to connect the remaining villages to the grid. The Minster mentioned that the un-electrified villages have been included under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which is a Centre-led initiative aimed at improving the quality, reliability, and affordability of the power supply.
According to Mondal, the recent rains have provided much-needed relief to the power department, which had been facing a prolonged dry spell. The department took steps to avoid load-shedding, despite the lean period, and the minister expressed hope that the upcoming rain would continue to ensure uninterrupted power supply. The minister assured that there would be no disruptions due to malfunctioning electromagnetic or mechanical components in power-generating units.
In the past, Meghalaya has experienced long hours of load-shedding, but the situation has improved significantly. Mondal acknowledged the concerns over unavailable and faulty transformers, which have been raised by several MLAs during the recently concluded budget session. However, the minister assured that the government would address these issues gradually, citing plans to upgrade the Tura transformer unit and install another unit in Jowai to meet the power needs in the Jaintia Hills region.
Mondal also mentioned that he has brought the issue of the Tura unit to the attention of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who agreed to provide state funds for sub-stations to mitigate power fluctuations and outages. The minister’s efforts are expected to bring relief to Meghalaya’s power consumers, who have been bearing the brunt of the power shortages and disruptions.
As the state continues to work on its power sector overhaul, the RDSS remains a crucial initiative aimed at strengthening the distribution sector through financial sustainability and operational efficiency. With the government’s commitment to improving the power situation, Meghalaya’s residents can expect a more reliable and affordable power supply in the near future.
