UK MPs Detained in Israel: Women’s Freedom Under Siege as Security Forces Crack Down on Truth
UK MPs Detained at Israeli Border, Barred Entry Amid Tensions Over Gaza Conflict
Two British Labour MPs, Yuan Yang and Abtisam Mohamed, were detained and barred from entering Israel by its immigration authorities, according to a statement from the UK’s Foreign Minister David Lammy. The MPs, who were part of a parliamentary delegation, were visiting Israel as part of a planned trip when they were stopped and told they would not be allowed entry, Lammy said in a statement late Saturday.
Sky News reported that the MPs were suspected of having plans to document the activities of Israeli security forces and spread anti-Israel hatred. The Israeli immigration ministry reportedly stated that the MPs’ detention was due to suspicions of their activities, while the UK Foreign Office has not commented on the specific reasons for the detention. Both MPs flew to Israel from Luton on Saturday, according to Sky News.
Lammy has condemned the treatment of the MPs, stating that it is "no way to treat British parliamentarians." He added that the UK government is focused on securing a ceasefire and negotiations to stop the bloodshed in Gaza. The UK has been critical of Israel’s recent actions in Gaza, including its decision to overturn a ceasefire with Hamas and launch a military operation in the region.
The situation in Gaza has been dire, with hundreds of Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes and all supplies of food, fuel, and humanitarian aid halted. Israel has escalated its military operation in the region, citing Hamas’s refusal to disarm and release its hostages. Hamas, however, has denied any involvement in the recent violence and has instead accused Israel of provoking the conflict.
The detention of the MPs comes amid growing tensions between the UK and Israel over the Gaza conflict. On Wednesday, Israeli police arrested two associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on suspicion of accepting money from Qatar to promote a positive image of the Gulf Arab state in Israel. Qatar has been a key mediator in Hamas’s negotiations with Israel, but Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing.
The UK’s Foreign Minister David Lammy has vowed to support the detained MPs, stating that the UK government will make representations to the Israeli government to resolve the situation. As the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, the UK and Israel remain at odds over the best course of action to bring about a peaceful resolution.
