Stand-up Comedian Samay Raina Appears Before Guwahati Crime Branch Over Obscenity Allegations
In a recent development, stand-up comedian Samay Raina was summoned to appear before the Guwahati Crime Branch in connection with a case filed against him and several other influencers for allegedly promoting obscenity and vulgar content on the YouTube show “India’s Got Latent.” Raina had initially informed the police that he was abroad for a comedy tour and unable to comply with the summons. However, he has since appeared and recorded his statement as part of the ongoing probe.
According to Joint Police Commissioner Ankur Jain, Raina was questioned by the investigating officer and his statement was recorded as a part of the investigation. The case, registered on February 10, names several popular content creators, including Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Ranveer Allahbadia, among others. The FIR was lodged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), IT Act, Cinematograph Act, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The police have issued notices to the individuals named in the FIR, including Raina, Chanchlani, Allahbadia, and others, and are following the legal procedure. In light of the controversy, Raina has rescheduled his India tour and assured fans that refunds will be provided for booked tickets. He took to Instagram to make the announcement, “You all will get the refunds shortly, see you soon.” His tour was set to kick off in the coming months.
Ranveer Allahbadia, another influencer named in the FIR, has issued a public apology for a viral comment he made during an episode of the show. He admitted that his remarks were inappropriate and lacked humor, stating, “Comedy is not my forte… my comment wasn’t even funny. I apologize.” Allahbadia also vowed to use his platform more responsibly. Meanwhile, influencer Rakesh Sawant, who appeared on the show, was summoned by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell and recorded his statement on February 27.
The controversy surrounding the YouTube show has sparked a conversation about the line between comedy and obscenity, with many calling for greater regulation and accountability among content creators.
