Meghalaya Ranks Second in Domestic Tourist Arrivals in Northeast, Assam Tops the List
In a recent Parliament address, Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Sukanta Majumdar, announced that Meghalaya ranked second in domestic tourist arrivals in the Northeast, closely trailing Assam. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Meghalaya welcomed 1,371,674 domestic tourists during the 2024-25 fiscal period. Assam led the region with an impressive 7,612,720 domestic visitors.
While Meghalaya’s domestic tourist arrivals were notable, the state’s foreign tourist arrivals were less impressive, with 19,973 visitors in 2024-25. This placed Meghalaya fourth in the Northeast, behind Sikkim, which recorded the highest number of foreign tourists with 93,908 visitors, followed by Tripura with 66,708 and Assam with 23,818. On the other hand, Manipur had the lowest tourist figures, with 57,701 domestic and 3,688 foreign visitors, largely attributed to ongoing strife in the state.
Across the country, India saw a significant rebound in tourism in 2023, with foreign tourist arrivals increasing by 47.90% to 9.52 million, reaching 87.1% of pre-pandemic levels. Domestic tourist arrivals surged by 44.98% to 2,509.63 million, with domestic tourist spending reaching a whopping Rs 14.64 trillion.
The Ministry of DoNER has committed to promoting tourism in the Northeast through various infrastructure projects, including the Northeast Special Infrastructure Development Scheme, the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region, and North Eastern Council initiatives. Majumdar emphasized the ministry’s commitment to bolstering the region’s tourism sector and improving infrastructure to attract more visitors.
India’s tourism sector has made a remarkable comeback in 2023, with foreign tourist arrivals and domestic tourist visits increasing significantly. According to the Ministry of Tourism, India’s foreign exchange earnings from tourism rose to Rs 2,31,927 crore, indicating a strong rebound in the sector.
Overall, the data highlights the Northeast’s potential as a tourist destination, and efforts by the government to promote tourism in the region are expected to yield positive results. As the region looks to capitalize on its natural beauty, rich culture, and history, it is expected that tourist arrivals will continue to rise, making it a key contributor to the country’s economy.
