Outrage in Pune: Patients Stage Turmoil at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital Demanding Better Services
Protests Erupt Outside Pune Hospital over Alleged Refusal of Treatment to Pregnant Woman
A massive protest took place outside Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital in Pune on Friday, following the death of a pregnant woman who was allegedly refused admission due to a demanded advance payment of Rs 10 lakhs. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with various political parties and social organizations rallying against the hospital.
According to BJP MLC Amit Gorhe, the deceased woman, Tanisha Bhise, was in her early thirties and the wife of his secretary Sushant. Bhise was turned away by the hospital staff despite being in a critical condition, reportedly due to the hospital’s demand for an advance payment of Rs 10 lakhs. The hospital, which is a charitable multi-specialty hospital founded in 2001, has been accused of prioritizing profits over patients’ lives.
Police deployed at the hospital’s entrance to maintain law and order as activists from different political parties, including the Shiv Sena, Congress, and Nationalist Congress Party, gathered to protest outside the hospital. Workers of the Shiv Sena hurled coins at the hospital staff, while members of the Congress threw ink on the security cabin, demanding a thorough probe into the incident. The Patit Pavan Sanghatna, a right-wing outfit, blackened the hospital’s board, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena presented duplicate currency notes at the Charity Commissioner’s office.
The protesters argued that the hospital, despite receiving various benefits from the government, including a prime piece of land in Pune city for just Rs 1 per year, had refused treatment to the pregnant woman due to a lack of payment. The hospital’s alleged lack of compassion has sparked widespread anger, with many calling for a re-examination of the institution’s charity status.
In a separate incident, a group of BJP women workers vandalized the private clinic of Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas at the Ashwini Hospital, where Bhise had consulted with him earlier. The incident has been reported to the police, and a case has been registered against the group for vandalism.
The Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital has faced backlash from various quarters, with many calling for an immediate probe into the incident and action against the hospital staff responsible for the alleged refusal of treatment. The incident highlights the need for better healthcare infrastructure and more transparent charity practices in India.
