Mizoram’s Thenzawl on the Verge of Transformation: Becoming India’s Next Peace City Under CM Lalduhoma’s Vision
Mizoram’s Thenzawl Census Town to Become ‘Peace City’
Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, has announced plans to develop Thenzawl, a census town in Serchhip district, into a ‘peace city’ capable of housing around 10 lakh of the population. This ambitious project, aimed at transforming the town into a model of urban development, is set to receive financial support from the Centre, following a discussion between Lalduhoma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to Lalduhoma, he has also discussed the plan with the 16th Finance Commission, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved a grant of Rs 10 crore for developing a master plan for the project. However, the Chief Minister emphasized that it will take time for the plan to materialize.
The proposed ‘peace city’ will not only provide a conducive environment for the town’s growing population but also capitalize on its existing attractions, which include the traditional Mizo handloom industry, Vantawng Fall (the highest waterfall in the state), deer park, and the state’s lone golf course. To further boost tourism, Lalduhoma announced plans to develop a ropeway in Vantawng Fall.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the concerted efforts of his government to curb drug abuse, noting that the administration focuses on moral reformation and will continue to take measures in this regard. He commended civil society organizations, including the Young Mizo Association (YMA), for their partnership in bringing about social reformation, social security, and fighting against the drug menace.
As the largest civil society organization in the northeastern state, the YMA was represented at a conference in Buangpui village, where Lalduhoma made the announcement. Given its strategic location, about 90 km from Aizawl, Thenzawl has the potential to become a significant hub for economic development and cultural exchange in the region.
With the planned development of Thenzawl into a ‘peace city,’ Mizoram is poised to make a significant stride towards urbanization, economic growth, and social welfare. As the project takes shape, the state’s government and civil society organizations will work closely together to ensure its success, making it a model for sustainable urban development in the years to come.
