Avian Flu Outbreak Sparks Government Action in India
In a bid to curb the spread of avian influenza, the Indian government has issued a stern warning to poultry farms to step up hygiene practices and adhere to strict biosecurity protocols. The move comes as the virus, which affects birds and occasionally spreads to mammals, has been reported in six zones across Jharkhand, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh since its first detection in India in 2006.
The latest outbreak has seen a disturbing trend of cross-species transmission, with wild birds and even big cats coming under the virus’s orbit. According to Animal Husbandry and Dairying Secretary Alka Upadhyaya, the government will implement a three-pronged strategy to combat the crisis. This includes enforcing stricter hygiene practices and biosecurity protocols at poultry farms to minimize infection risks, as well as mandating the registration of all farms within a month.
"This year, the virus has shown alarming cross-species transmission, impacting not just poultry but also wild birds and even big cats in some areas," Upadhyaya said during a high-level meeting with officials, policymakers, and industry representatives. The aim is to protect the poultry sector, which is critical for food security and rural livelihoods. "Strict biosecurity, scientific surveillance, and responsible industry practices are essential in our fight against bird flu," she emphasized.
One of the key strategies discussed was the possibility of allowing vaccines against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). While some vaccines are available, they only reduce virus shedding rather than providing complete immunity. India has already permitted the commercial use of an H9N2 (Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza) vaccine developed by ICAR-NIHSAD, Bhopal, and research is underway to develop an indigenous HPAI vaccine following global standards.
Upadhyaya also stressed the importance of predictive modelling and environmental surveillance systems for early outbreak detection. "Protecting our poultry sector is critical for food security and rural livelihoods. Strict biosecurity, scientific surveillance, and responsible industry practices are essential in our fight against bird flu," she reiterated.
As the situation unfolds, experts and policymakers will work together to contain the disease and prevent its spread. The government’s swift action and proactive approach demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding the poultry industry and protecting public health.
