Unlocking Delhi’s Hidden Community Spaces: DDA’s Innovative Revitalization Plan
Delhi: DDA to Convert More Community Centers into Libraries-Cum-Reading Rooms
In a bid to provide students with accessible and free library and reading room facilities, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to convert more of its underutilized community centers into libraries-cum-reading rooms. This decision comes after the successful launch of the “Aarambh Pustakalaya” at Old Rajendra Nagar, a student hotspot.
The initiative was motivated by a tragic incident last July, where three young lives were lost due to drowning in the basement of a private coaching center’s reading room. In the aftermath, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena asked the DDA to identify community centers close to students’ hubs that could be converted into libraries or reading rooms.
Since the inauguration of the first center on January 5, the response has been tremendous, with students and competitive examination aspirants flocking to the facility. The center offers 24/7 access, equipped with amenities like cafeterias, lockers, power plugs on all seats, air conditioning, newspapers and magazines, and separate toilets for men and women.
Four more such facilities, each with cafés, are currently under construction and expected to be completed by May. These centers will be located in areas with a high student population, including Adhchini village, Dwarka Sector 16 B, Vikaspuri M Block, and Rohini Sector 11.
DDA officials stated that the new facilities will be equipped with multiple amenities to facilitate a comfortable reading experience. “We want to ensure that students have access to a peaceful and conducive environment to study and prepare for their competitive exams,” said an official.
The initiative has been welcomed by students and teachers alike, who see it as a vital step towards addressing the issue of exploitative reading room facilities and high charges faced by students. With the DDA’s efforts, Delhi’s students can now look forward to a more accessible and inclusive academic experience.
