Scalpels Wielded by SC, Mamata Refuses Judgment as 25,000 Teachers Face the Axe
West Bengal Teachers and Staff Face Uncertain Future as Supreme Court Upholds High Court Verdict
The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Calcutta High Court’s verdict has left thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff across West Bengal’s schools in limbo. The verdict, which dismissed almost 26,000 appointments made by the state government in 2016, has been slammed by the Opposition parties, with the ruling TMC party expressing disappointment and outrage.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had vowed to appeal against the High Court order, has expressed her disappointment with the decision, saying that she believes the judgment has been influenced by the CPI(M) and the BJP. She argued that the “blanket dismissal” of all candidates was unfair, as not all appointees were guilty of wrongdoing. Banerjee claimed that the state government would support those who lost their jobs and vowed to appeal for a review in the Supreme Court.
The controversy surrounds the 2016 teacher recruitment scam, which led to the cancellation of over 25,000 appointments made by the School Service Commission (SSC). The Calcutta High Court had ordered fresh recruitment against the posts within 15 days, but the Supreme Court’s stay on the verdict had given the state government more time to file an appeal. The High Court eventually upheld its original verdict, dismissing the appointments and ordering the return of salaries with interest.
Meanwhile, the BJP state president, Sukanta Majumder, has launched a scathing attack on the TMC-led government, holding Banerjee responsible for the alleged corruption. He demanded her resignation, accusing her of selling the merit of educated unemployed youth in exchange for money.
The CPI(M) has also slammed the state government, accusing it of failing to segregate the list of genuine candidates from those who got jobs by giving money. The party’s state secretary, Md Selim, accused Banerjee of imbibing corruption from the RSS, which he claimed was responsible for the Vyapam scandal in Madhya Pradesh.
The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI inquiry into the alleged scam in 2022, which led to the arrest of several high-ranking officials, including former education minister Partha Chatterjee. The state government has promised to take steps to support those who lost their jobs, including a meeting with teachers who lost their jobs on April 7, which will be attended by the Chief Minister.
As the situation unfolds, the Supreme Court’s decision has raised concerns over the transparency of the state government’s response to the crisis. With the government promising to appeal for a review and the Opposition parties vowing to continue their fight against corruption, the future of thousands of educators in West Bengal remains uncertain.
