India’s Parliament Confirms President’s Rule in Manipur: Stability Returns Amid Turmoil
Manipur Imposes President’s Rule Amid Ongoing Tensions
The Indian parliament has passed a resolution confirming the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, following a period of turmoil in the state. The move came after the Rajya Sabha approved the resolution on Wednesday, just hours after the Lok Sabha gave its nod earlier in the day. The decision was made under Article 356(1) of the Constitution, allowing the President to assume control of the state in times of crisis.
The move sparked debate among lawmakers, with opposition parties accusing the government of failing to address the situation in Manipur. In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the decision, attributing the imposition of President’s Rule to the lack of a political party willing to form a government after the resignation of the state’s Chief Minister. Shah asserted that the resignation created a power vacuum, necessitating the President’s intervention. He also rejected allegations that the government had mishandled the situation, citing the surrender of over 10,000 youth in the northeast and peace prevailing in the state since the appointment of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the government’s handling of the situation, accusing it of lacking a strategy and long-term policy for the state. Kharge demanded an inquiry into the violence in Manipur and called for the government to send out a message of peace to the people of the state. Dr. Ajit Madhavrao Gopchade, a BJP MP, supported the resolution, pointing to the increased funding provided by the Narendra Modi government compared to the Congress-led government.
Other MPs, including Derek O’Brien from the TMC, Dr. Kanimozhi and NVN Somu from the DMK, and Sanjay Singh from the AAP, shared their perspectives on the situation in Manipur. The debate highlights the complexities of the situation in Manipur, with tensions between different communities still lingering.
